Read the "Hunger Games" trilogy recently... Really enjoyed some of the characters found there-within, but found the tone of the books made quite an impact. She started as a fanart of the main character, but ended up morphing into something else as I began trying to depict the tone of the character more than follow the verbatim description.

Of course, I also bought a J.W. Waterhouse book recently so I must say the color palette and some aesthetic choices are a response to my LOVE for his work :).

See!? I'm being good and making more personal work :). It's amazing how reinvigorating it is to draw for the fun of it..

Saw a bird while hanging out with Andre this weekend. It looked like a Mourning Dove who's name and coloring really tickled my fancy... They have such mesmerizing eyes!

ANYWAY. Long story short. Was inspired. Drew a thing. It turned into something else. Mother Nature always has the BEST colors. What else is new?

Snowy Bastion Art

The Kid in the wintery lands of the Tazal Terminals! The long(er) story behind this is a request from Valve for some new winter sale promotional artwork. I talked to Greg, our creative director and we decided it'd be fun to poke light fun at a couple of the AAA titles' promotional artwork at the time - no names shall be named - but the main characters all sported the same pose. Of course, I think the goal was lost on everyone but me once I finished it, so it just ended up being a illo of the Kid being "badass" XD.

It's really strange to think about the time I spent on Bastion... it hardly even seems real, thinking back on it! We were always in such a rush to get everything we wanted into the game that I think it was easy to overlook the fact that we had in our hands something with the potential to reach out and touch the souls of kindred spirits...! If you've played Bastion, I hope your experience was positive, and even though I'm certainly not 100% proud of EVERYTHING in the game (let's face it, an artist's work is never done!), I am so happy to have had the opportunity to work with such an excellent team to create something that truly came from the heart :).

Ok... I finally slogged through my blog and fixed as much as I could... unfortunately certain "in progress" shots are gone forever, since I don't make a habit of keeping those on my hard drives :(. I shall resurrect both this blog, and a TUMBLR account(!) from the ashes of fiery destruction! Thanks for sticking with me guys... I truly appreciate it!

Been in a bit of an art slump lately. Likely culprit is simply not drawing enough for pleasure/personal edification. Here's a quick one I started at last NOVEMBER's Massive Black workshop in San Francisco (!?..jeez...has it really been that long?). I had only a tablet PC; who's color accuracy is extremely questionable, so the black and white sketch is what I began with. Brought it onto my main rig and went at it with color! Some kind of...holy warrior person!

Hello dear friends! Here's a result of two-evening's allocated doodle time :). I got caught up in this one, though I'll share the rough with you, as well as some alternate versions that were a result of an artist's indecisiveness ;D.

Here's the piece with BUILDLING. I had a vision in my head... I also sort of wanted to move on but essentially, I only brought it half way and wussed out. Either way, it seems worth sharing but ultimately not my preference for a final ;D.

Finally, here is an early version of this painting. I almost left it at this. I had reached a point where my inner dialogue was telling me "If I touch it anymore, I'll only make it worse". I find it's sometimes worth heeding those feelings (gotta know when to put down the brush!), by putting an extra %5 in trying to overcome them in order to see whether you're actually right! In this case, I'm very happy I continued on, and am somewhat horrified that I would've considered posting the image in this state XD. Of course, there are tradeoffs... I think I prefer the arm positioning in this rough stage, but upon tightening up the piece, it just didn't "work" either because my skills are lacking, or the body simply doesn't work that way (or in reality...probably a combination of both). In hindsight I also prefer the more controlled color palette here and regret making some of the tones too warm. To quote Regina Spektor....Color, you are my sweetest downfall!

TL;DR random ramblings on Cass Cain/DC Comics: I love Cassandra Cain so much so that I am willing to forgive this particular character design which I find vaguely distasteful... I adjusted the design in a couple ways that I find more agreeable. What are your thoughts on the upcoming DC reboot? Personally, I am a bit tired of how fraught with inconsistencies the universe has been the last couple of years - maybe it'd been inconsistent for far longer, but I hadn't emotionally invested so much in a character before - but perhaps with the reboot we'll see a new age of the DCU :)!

Regardless of Cass' fate in the new DCU, here's to an amazing character and her amazing series.

Rainbow Guards

I'm so happy I finally found the time/willpower to finish this one. Recently, I've been having a lot of fun painting textures by hand, and it manifested itself in a painting which is (I hope) in the spirit of paintings I love. I wanted to express the seed of the "Rainbow Guard" idea (created by re-reading Game of Thrones in preparation for Dance with Dragons), though this is a markedly different interpretation of the idea!

Anyway, I should...try to draw more than TWO CHARACTERS in one scene?! Sigh! Anyway, now that Bastion is out, I'll hopefully be getting more time to pursue personal work... Sometimes when working on extended projects and being confined to a particular style I find it's easy to accidentally slip into "auto-art" mode where you paint without thinking much about what you're painting, why you're choosing a color, or whether you should place a shadow. Time for me to retrain a lot of skills that have a thick coating of rust! :D

I feel a little like I've lost control over my color usage over the last couple of years... Now that Bastion is more or less wrapped up, I'm hoping I can begin the road to recovery and expanding horizons :). Here's a doodle of the evening - started as an insane urge to draw chainmail, which quickly faded. I was really trying to channel the preraphaelites whom I love so much with only moderate success... I'll do better next time!

CCG's....E3 2011 results!

I had a particularly good time with this fellow! Though it took a little more wrassling than usual to get this how I wanted it, it was well worth it! "Dragon Caller" for FFG's Warhammer CCG :). This particular piece was also lucky enough to be chosen as the "battle pack" cover art! RAD! :D

The 12 year old in me is SO happy that I get paid to draw elves. Okay...the 27 year old in me is also very happy about that!
In other news... Bastion had an amazing showing at E3! Thanks all of you who took the time to play it, and of course thanks to all of you who have been supporting me in spirit all this time :)!

Heres yours truly with one of our Bastion kiosk's, all decorated with nominations and awards! An honor, for sure - thanks to all of you who believe in us :)! This must be what it feels like to be a proud mother!

My sole regret at E3 is that I wasn't able to try any games or take pictures with BOOTH BABBBESS (!) since I was essentially tethered to one of our two booth areas D:. I got to hold a powered-down PSVita which felt special, and also got a peak at the game "Journey" which looks incredibly atmospheric. Can't wait to learn more about that one! Can't WAIT for next E3!!!

Obviously this was not a huge challenge given that I only show parts of the Roboskellie, but it's a step in the right direction...I hope.... Anyway, it was good fun :).

More bedtime doodles! I seem to have time for nothing much else lately D:. Bastion requires so much of my attention - like a newborn child! Perhaps I should do some Bastion bedtime doodles!? :)

Having fun with underlighting, and more...extreeeeeme angles. I find it somewhat fascinating that I associated an underlit face with horror scenes/scary faces a'la Flashlight-under-the-chin, when after studying some of my favourite artist's work I realized they almost always used strong underlighting in such a way as to make the face softer, and more appealing. How strange, the dichotemy!

Dudley Madness! I don't know what came over me, I love his taunt though. I have no experience with comic strips and such so sorry if this is terrible :(. Maybe I can get better! The "comic" part was done before the bust shot - they actually originated as sketches for the bust shot, but I ended up throwing them out XD. Went back and inked them, since I thought it might be fun (and it was!)!

Lastly, I have a bad habit of getting distracted/wanting to draw something else mid-painting, so just though I'd show you guys a WIP of the other piece I'm working on ;D! Lately I've been revisiting a lot of my favourite pre-raphaelite artists and have developed a huge urge to just....paint...knights....and fabric.

Mechanical Studies

I have told myself over and over again that I should start trying to "learn" technical design - and now I am finally going to take the dive. This is super intimidating for me, but I refuse to believe I can't conquer it *POSITIVE THINKING!!!*. My first of hopefully many studies - In hindsight I should've probably chosen something simpler so I could pay more attention to how the mechanisms work together, rather than just getting caught up in the finer details of colors/making things balance correctly. I guess it's all learning either way, but I was expecting something different! I had to make up the parts hidden by the cables, but other than that I was pretty much completely referencing the photo.

I'm not gonna lie....

This was not the most fun thing I have ever done. Aside from the perspective and mechanical errors, I'm also vaguely disappointed and frustrated by the somewhat over-rendered/stiff quality of how it came out. I'm sort of at a loss in terms of how to bring the "soul" back to this, but I'll sleep on it. I doodled in a random no-context woman with no top since it seemed appropriate (!?!?!). Robot + scantily clad woman is apparently, the only way I can think of to make this better! Maybe I'll go back and finish up the woman, but at this point I'm sort of "done" with this haha.

The orange was pleasing to me before but now burns my eyes! LOL

I was playing some Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and got stuck on the first Titan boss :(. The game is gorgeous (the amount of love and care that was put into the art - that someone ALLOWED to be put into the art - makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside) but sometimes I get a little frustrated with it's lack of guidance, even though it's a very linear game. Anyway, I got lazy and turned it off after not knowing what to do after two tries, and it seemed like a convenient excuse to do some relax-art.

One thing I want to do more of is recreational art which I don't necessarily feel like I need to polish. I suffer from "need to polish it, if I'm drawing it" syndrome, which I think is both a good and bad thing for all aspiring artists. One the one hand it means always getting a a potential portfolio piece out of your work. On the other hand, art starts to feel chore-like quickly, and who's to say something done quickly isn't portfolio material? It can happen... not often I think, but it can haha.

Anyway, whatever! I don't know what this is besides me trying to use cool colors and lighting more bravely. I may be tempted to go back and tighten things up later. But for now, I call it done!

Got restless while working on a bigger/longer painting, so I took a break to just doodle about... it ended up being Cassandra Cain... of course. I have heard recent news concerning her which lights a small spark of hope in my heart that her character will come back in full force within the DC universe, but we SHALL SEE. Cassandra Cain quickly became Cassandra Cain and Tim Drake... and then lots of DISTRESSED FACE. I have a thing for drawing two people in one painting. I wonder why I've never drawn three? Or four?

Wheeeeeooo! My life went through a crazy time of transition the last two months - job change, and lots of other things, but finally I am having time to create art! Here is some new stuff!

and a bit of a quick one just to relax a bit! Just going with a seamstress/assassin theme... and working on more dynamic poses! Gotta keep pushing myself!

Anyway, I'm now working with a startup company making indie games! The company is called Supergiant Games, and we're making games for XBLA and PSN! Our first game is called "Bastion" and I'm...basically the art person ;D. Doing lots of hand painted environments, which is amusing as I consider environmental work my weak point... thankfully at least this is a great way to force myself to get experience on the subject! :)

I just recently purchased a Tablet PC in order to paint more during meetings and such while at work. I did some very basic sketches while on the plane back home for the Holidays and really wanted to finish them up when I got home. The Tablet PC unfortunately isn't properly color adjusted yet...trying to fix it, but right now it saturates the crap out of everything, and lacks proper contrast, so anything coming out of my tablet pc for now will be either quite simple, or as basic idea for me to fully express on a desktop computer :).

I finished two in the last two nights using my desktop/wacom tablet:

An illustration done for the non logged in page of Gaia Online (my current employerrrrr). A style I'm not really used to doing, so I had to channel my inner Ethe XD! Was quite fun, though there are definitely some gigantic issues with perspective here LOL. By the time I noticed it was...too late :/.

Still life D:. I rarely ever do this. I should do it more. More. More. More. A majority of my art is "instinctual" which probably makes me much slower than I could be, and more prone to having to fix junk later in the process. Personally I think finding a balance between instinct and technical understanding is best :D

I really hope DC has something great in mind for Cassandra Cain, because she's been through the poop-blender a hundered times in the last two years or so. I know I'm just being nostalgic, but I loved the dynamic between Cass and Robin back during her Batgirl series (and none of this League of Assassins/drugs/etc bull existed). So here's my little tidbit for the night :). Was over at Andre's house, watching some Always Sunny in Philadelphia (which is awesome) and One Piece episodes, so I decided to snag his tablet and draw some stuff while watching :).

I want to do it. But realistically I know that I don't have the time to give the love and care a raptor (VELOCIRAPTOR!) deserves :(. So here I am living vicariously through artage! I know... her hand is about to get ROCKED.

And here are some close ups. Mostly, for anyone's that was curious - I wanted to show how loose you can be when painting while still giving the impression of detail. I remember I used to *slave* away at details - nothing was left unrendered and unblended. Though I think it's important to be able to create hyper-clean-detail when it's called for, for the purpose of getting ideas down on paper, structured looseness is a good skill to practice :). I'm still working on it >_>!

This turned into a little bit of color practice - lately I've felt really out of touch with non-cutesy colors as I've been working on painting Gaia environments for too long. The environments generally lend themselves to a pastel, hypersaturated palette and less contrast, relying more on color contrast for shading. As you can see I still had some trouble staying away from the bright colors XD. I have a habit of staying "safe" with my lighting, so I threw that in there too.

Anyway, sorry nothing finished :(. I might go back and finish this later, but I have like a BAJILLION other pieces that I need to finish first lol.

Was in the mood for something simple and fun :d. I have to tell you guys that for the first 24 years of my life I had a huge phobia of being asked to create something cute. I suppose it's sort of inevitable when I'm surrounded by my amazingly-cute-comes-naturally-coworkers at Gaia Online, but I was and am really excited to finally have some semblance of confidence in creating "cute" work :). Thank you guys <3, Phi for her awesome crash course in cute, where she forced me to make the head BIGGER! And the eyes FURTHER APART! and LOWER! Like...RIGHT NEXT TO THE MOUTH!

Fremere's Guard Illustrations

These are illustrations created for Evolving Item promotion over at GaiaOnline.com. Though I usually only get about a day to work on these, it's always nice to be able to sit down and create a little something extra to add some lasting story, or permanence to an otherwise quickly "forgotten" item in the history of Gaia's fast paced avatar asset creation schedule.

The character's is "Fremere" from the evolving item Fremere's Guard. The whole project was really a dedication to all the users on our site - specifically the GCD and Site Feedback forums. I tried to stir up controversy for months, but it seems like the only disatisfaction the users felt took place the moment my item had finished evolving. Oh well ;).

I need to post here more often....

My dear three viewers.... sorry for being away for FOREVER X_X. Unexpected circumstances and general bad timing has kept me away, but here's a little of this and that :). Thanks for stopping by :d. Oh...and I had a white Christmas up in Seattle! HOW JAWESOME!

First, random concept of random Unicorn based whatever with ugly gun which I clearly don't know how to design....yet. I've tentatively named the unit "Shadhavar" after the "Evil Unicorn" of Persia.

Mononke, the Anime TV series (not Princess Mononoke) is a stylistic treat... I couldn't help myself :9!

Wooo, so I'm finally settling into my job here in San Jose... Gaia is awesome! Working on a game (MMORPG even) is awesome! Working with other artists is awesome! Everything is all around kickass though nothing is ever *perfect* right? :) But yeah, as a first job in he art/video game industry I really can't complain too much. San Jose is a little too hot/sunny for my taste, but luckily I spend most of my days indoors, inside a cubicle (sounds somewhat deranged.... but my Seattle friends will know what I mean I think :)).

I've done a ton of art in the last two months, though most of it isn't anything I can show. I guess that's the downside of working on stuff like this - you have to wait a million years until all the work you've been slaving away at can be shared. It doesn't help that I haven't had internet at home for these two months (which also explains my lack of replying)! BUT anyway... on to the art!

Stuff has kind of exploded in my life lately, so been rather busy! I'm moving to San Jose to work at Gaia on what will hopefully be totally awesome :).

I finally sat down and painted like mad for a few hours, and here's the work in progress! Shyeahhh I added some poor fewl who's getting owned with the easy in the corner :). Should be finished within the next day or two I hope (Gotta pack! Six days until I leave!)
